Chess Heights Lagos Monthly Concludes: Winners Emerge In Thrilling Chess Encounters

The Chess Heights Lagos Monthly rapid chess tournament, held at Jobady Hotel, Mende, Maryland on Saturday, May 4, 2024, has concluded. The event, organized by Chess Heights Foundation, brought together some of the finest chess players in Lagos to compete for the top prize.

The tournament featured 42 players, including previous winners Oluwole Oladele, Teniola Abiola, and Michael Izuogu, who battled it out in 6 rounds of intense chess. The event was played in a Swiss format, with a time control of 20 minutes plus an increment of 10 seconds from move 1.

The tournament had 3 categories namely Open Category with 7 prizes, Ladies Category with 3 prizes and medals of gold, silver and bronze for Under Fourteen Category.

The Under Fourteen Category was dominated by students of Platform School as they carted away all medals. Bronze went to Popoola Taiwo with a score of 3 points, silver went to Adekanye Adejuwon with a score of 4 points while gold went to Amir Obe who at just 11 defeated many adults including drawing past champion Michael Izuogu. Amir Obe scored 4.5 points.

For the Ladies category, the third prize went to Uche Chioma who scored 2 points, the second prize went to Odumade Yetunde who scored 3.5 points while Ogechi Emmanuel was Ladies champion with a score of 4 points.

The Open category which is the main category had 7 prizes. The 7th prize had a tie between 5 persons they are Odusina Olufemi, Adetula Opeyemi, Ogundare Favour, Adekanye Adejuwon the boy who also got silver in Under Fourteen and Umeodinka Chibuikem. These all scored 4 points.

There was a 3 way tie for 4th to 6th between Michael Izuogu, Adeyinka Adewole and Amir Obe who got gold also in Under Fourteen. These scored 4.5 points.

There was a two way tie for 2nd and 3rd between Evbuomwan Efosa and Oladele Oluwole both scoring 5 points. The champion was Teniola Abiola who won all his 6 games. This is the second time Teniola Abiola will be winning this event.

TheChess Heights Lagos Monthly of May 2024 chess tournament was a resounding success, showcasing the skill and sportsmanship of Nigeria’s chess players. We look forward to the next edition of this prestigious event on June 1.
